Resources

To help in your research, we are organizing and making available some of the many sites we have found. Below are links and documents on many topics, including hiring a contractor, useful general consumer information, trade associations and organizations, and interesting vendors and new materials. Many of these sites are links to other web pages, while some are our documents that we have developed from observation of the trials and tribulations our customers have been through.

We will be adding links as we find them. Since the Internet is a volatile area, we cannot guarantee that all links are current - we test them periodically, but if you find one that no longer attaches, please notify us. Please let us know about interesting sites that you think should be shared with our other readers.

Hiring a contractor:

http://www.gaporter.com/refquest.htm is a list of questions we recommend asking someone who is referring a contractor to you - after all, if they have had work done by this contractor, they will have first hand information on them.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/services/homeimpv.htm is a site from the Federal Trade Commission that has a lot of very good general information, from trade terminology to contract specifications to suggestions on questions to ask before hiring a contractor.

http://www.dayton.bbb.org is the local Better Business Bureau site, where you can locate information on companies in the Dayton, Ohio area.

General consumer information

http://www.gaporter.com/expect.htm is a copy of our booklet of what to expect during the remodeling project.

http://www.remodeling.hw.net/pages/remodelingonline/Story.nsp?story_id=1000027497 is a compilation of cost versus value of remodeling from the Remodeling magazine site. Want to know just how much extra value that deck will add when it comes time to sell your house? This site will give rough percentages for several cities and regions.

http://realestate.yahoo.com/realestate/homevalues/address.html lets you look up the sale price of homes - give it the address and zop code and the span of years you would like to research, and this page will give you an idea what a similar home in your neighborhood was sold for. This can help you decide how much money you want to spend on remodeling your house without making it the most expensive home on the block.

http://www.hud.gov/healthy/mainmenu.html has great suggestions from HUD on making your home safer for your children.

http://www.hud.gov/hhchild.html is another HUD child safety site.

http://www.buildingonline.com has a search engine for manufacturers, appliances, and many other topics that is very user-friendly.

Trade associations and organizations:

http://www.build.com is a directory of home improvement web sites.

http://www.homebuilder.com and http://www.nahb.com are trade associations for new home builders.

http://www.nibs.org is the National Institute of Building Sciences, which will have regulatory information.

http://www.improvenet.com is a directory of resources for remodeling projects.

http://www.apti.org is the Association for Preservation Technology, for those interested in saving older buildings.

http://www.nari.org is the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

http://www.kitchensource.com, http://www.kitchenweb.com, and http://www.nkba.org are sites for kitchen and bath resources, and the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Interesting vendors and new materials:

The links for vendors are many, and are organized into pages of similar links.

Appliances, including the home 'professional' versions. Another good source is the newsgroup rec.food.equipment; many services (like Dejanews) have good search engines there you can search on topics like gas ranges or stand mixers.

Cabinets and countertops, both kitchen and bathroom.

Flooring comes in a lot of different types; some of these should of course be seen in person but these sites will let you see some of the variety.

Windows and doors, including skylights, are views both in and out of your house - here is a wide range of styles.

Miscellaneous exterior materials includes roofing, siding, and decking wood.
